Many databases and Web sites offering industry and company data (such as Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage) look up information by SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) and NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes. These codes group establishments into industries according to similar types of business (or the processes used to produce goods and services). These codes were developed to facilitate the government’s collection, organization and analysis of economic data.
